“Keep your pants on” The blue cup with Akaroa lighthouse represents the French explorer (Jean-François Langlois). In 1838 he paid a deposit for Akaroa to the Maoris which included, 2 cloaks, 6 pairs of trousers, 12 hats, 2 pairs of shoes, some pistols, axes and 2 shirts. He headed back to France to gather a group to assist him in developing Akaroa as a French colony. Unfortunately by the time he returned to New Zealand, the Maori’s had signed the Treaty of Waitangi with the British and a British flag was at Akaroa on their return. Fortunately due to some amicable negotiations between the French and the British, Langlois was still able to settle in Akaroa as planned. (http://history-nz.org/index.html). Blue Tea Cup - depicting the lighthouse at Akaroa , English Rose – to represent the British, “Maori ware” inspired by Royal Doulton cup.
“Last laugh” The pieces in this painting represent the extinction of the Laughing Owl (Maori name Whekau) thought to be due to the European settlers arriving in New Zealand as a result of bringing cats and dogs. The teal cup - inspired by the turquoise Crown Lynn cups commission for Air New Zealand in 1965 and the English rose. The last laugh is with the owl, who is clutching the dog or cats collar.
